Kids in the Kitchen was born in September 2020 as a safe but community focused alternative to our pre pandemic healthy cooking workshops.
Each week families come and pick up a bag of ingredients for a recipe that is low cost, simple enough for children to make and healthy. Community is created on our What’s App where parents post pictures of what they and their children have made. The group has a lovely encouraging feel to it, with parents complementing each other on their dishes.
The programme is constantly developing according to the needs of the families.
We want them to feel its their project and have opportunities to share their ideas and skills which is why, this term we have had a ‘Parent Takeover’. Every other week parents share one of their favourite family recipes and everyone gets a bag with all the ingredients to make it.
The transformation of our food programme has helped us to bring dignity
during extremely challenging times. It has helped us to create a safe space for parents to have fun cooking with their children, and given the families opportunities to connect with each other through the provision of food and through sharing and learning new recipes and skills.
